Resources for Parents
The following list includes the website resources that I believe are most helpful for parents. They provide general information, programming options, and support.
- University of Connecticut has compiled a great list of websites just for parents. They include a variety of national organizations that advocate fr gifted students. The site also features various programs to support the needs of gifted students. Although you are more than welcome to look through the site yourself, I have picked a few to review myself below.
- The National Association for Gifted Children is an organization for professionals and parents that provides a variety of news, research, and resources. The ABC's pf parenting gifted students is a great place to start if you are curious about what exactly being gifted means and what to look for in your child. They also provide a starting point for finding appropriate academic and summer programs that match your child's interests and abilities.
- If you are looking to connect with and learn from other parents of gifted students, then SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) is the website for you. SENG Model Parent Groups are created to bring parents together, provide them with materials to increase understanding of giftedness, and provide them with programs and opportunities for their children. If you can't find a live group, there are plenty of online support groups as well.
- The Davidson Institute for Talent Development provides multiple services for gifted students. Not only do they have free services for students and their parents, they award students who have completed a significant piece of work scholarships so that they are able to attend summer programs (known as the Davidson Fellows Scholarships). Criteria for applying can be found here!
- Hoagies' Gifted Education Page provides parents with a great overview of everything you might need to know about gifted students. The site also keeps you up-to-date on current research in gifted education.
- Finally, when you need a break from the overwhelming amount of information that these sites contain, check out this blog written by a mom of gifted kids.
